Mr. Churchwells weekly update
Posted by Jason Cooper on 11/1/2024Hello Wishram Students, Staff, Friends and Family!
Have you voted yet? There are only four days left---Tuesday, November 5th is the deadline if you're not registered to vote, you're in luck; Washington State allows same-day registration. Just head to your country's auditor's office to get registered. Remember, your vote truly matters.I would like to extend my sincere gratitude to our wonderful community for their generous donations supporting the Halloween Carnival. The event was a tremendous success, with a great turnout and many delighted children leaving with an abundance of candy and prizes. I would also like to thank the dedicated Wishram students and staff who worked diligently to organize and clean up after the event. Your efforts are truly appreciated! At this time, our high school football team is in 2nd place in the league. This Friday, we will be playing against Sherman. A win will help us maintain our 2nd place position, while a loss will drop us to 3rd. Regardless of the outcome, we will secure a spot in the postseason. Great job to all the players and coaches! If you have time today, please head over to Moro, OR, to cheer on our team.Monday, October 28, 2024The School Nurse was here. The School Therapist was here.I attended my Early Career Superintendent Academy class from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m., focusing on utilizing our resources and mentors. Representatives from the Washington State School Directors Association (WSSDA) joined us to discuss the resources they provide for superintendents, including goal setting, communication structures, and superintendent evaluations. Additionally, members of the Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction (OSPI) were present to support us with the Education Grants Management System (EGMS), where we apply for grant funding. I found the EGMS system to be quite challenging to navigate. The OSPI team also introduced a new initiative called the Small LEA Support Team (SLT), which is much needed for small rural schools. As I shared with Chris Reykdal, our State Superintendent, during my REC meeting, “Large districts have a person for every job, while small districts have 100 jobs for every person.”We had our Program Committee Meeting at 3:05. Main topics were conferences and end of the quarter grading.I was able to finish up our Ridership report.JH Basketball had their first practice. It started at 3:30 pm.Tuesday, October 29, 2024.The School Therapist was here.Picture retake was today as well as our whole school photo. We had a representative from the University of Washington here to talk to our Juniors and Seniors.I attended my weekly Rural Education Center meeting from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m., where Chris Reykdal joined us to discuss school budgets and OSPI's efforts to secure more funding for schools. The main topics of discussion included Maintenance, Supplies and Operating Costs (MSOC), Special Education, and Transportation funding—all of which are severely underfunded in Washington State. Chris also opened the floor for discussion and was willing to address some challenging questions.I had a zoom meeting from 11:00 am to 12:00 pm with my Superintendent Mentor.Wednesday, October 30, 2024Some of our HS kids have been staying late and working hard on the haunted house.Thursday, October 31, 2024Happy HalloweenWe held our Halloween carnival from 4:00 to 6:00 pm today.Friday, November 1, 2024Can you believe that it's already November? No School for Students.Teaching Staff will be in Professional Learning Development all day.
