Mr. Churchwells weekly update
Posted by Jason Cooper on 11/15/2024Hello Wishram Students, Staff, Friends, and Family!
Last Friday, our football team competed in the first round of the State Playoffs. Although we didn’t secure the win, we are incredibly proud of all our players and coaches. They finished the season in 3rd place in league play.
Wishram School is currently seeking inspiring and dedicated individuals who are interested in serving as substitute teachers and para pros when needed. We offer paid training and the opportunity to work with some of the most amazing people in the world. If this sounds like an opportunity you're excited about, give us a call at the school, and we'll help you get started on what could be one of the most rewarding careers there is.
Wishram School has a clothing locker stocked with a variety of good-quality items. If your child is in need of clothing, please reach out to our Guidance Counselor, Will Walters, who may be able to help you find exactly what you're looking for.

The School Therapist was here.
Our JH Basketball teams traveled to Trout Lake for the first game of the season. The girls lost but had a great time. Our JH boys took the victory. Great job to all.
I attended my weekly Rural Education Center meeting from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m. Discussion topics surrounded the recent election and outcomes. The featured presentation was given by Melissa Gombosky. The presentation was titled "Post-Election Analysis & Potential Impacts on Education in Washington State".
We held our weekly Program Committee Meeting after school, where one of the main topics of discussion was the recent increase in graffiti and vandalism, primarily in the boys’ bathroom. In response, we held a school-wide assembly with our secondary students to address the issue. During the assembly, we made it clear that if the vandalism did not stop, I would assign an adult to monitor the boys’ bathroom during free periods. We emphasized that, as a small school with limited resources, behavior like this undermines the positive initiatives we strive to provide for our students. Additionally, secondary staff were instructed to notify the office when frequent restroom requests came from students who regularly asked to use the bathroom during each period. We are noticing a concerning trend where several high school and middle school students request bathroom access every single period. We will be addressing this situation in the near future.

Ms. Hathaway and I attended a meeting with other Superintendents and HR personnel from various districts across the state. The discussion focused on employee absenteeism and its impact on the learning environment for students, as well as the strain it places on staff who must cover for absent colleagues. Many districts are considering stricter policies on absenteeism to address these challenges.
The District Implementation Team (DIT) for our Multi-Tiered System of Support (MTSS) met to discuss the MTSS training held on Friday, November 1st. Staff expressed optimism about the progress we're making and are confident that future assessments will demonstrate educational growth in our students.

We had our Migrant Education Program Meeting in the Wishram Gym starting at 5:00 pm. Rose George, ESD 105 Indigenous Migratory Education Coordinator, and Claudia Dominguez, ESD 105 Migrant Family Engagement and Student Leadership Coordinator were here to discuss the opportunities available for all Migrant Students. The turnout wasn't as great as we were hoping for, but we did have a couple of families stop by.
